PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

“Angel Annie” (~30 years old) has a brother that’s engaged to a famous singer. That singer has a hot bodyguard named Will. Will is known to pursue the thrills in life: hook-ups, tattoos, action-packed career, etc.

Annie is the opposite of Will. She’s never been intimate with anyone, doesn’t have any tattoos, and she works a safe job by running a flower shop (which was her mom’s dream).

Because Annie hasn’t had much luck at dating (since she’s super awkward and starts rambling about the reproduction processes of flowers, etc., which causes some guys, such as John, to fake an emergency of a friend getting a flat tire), Will becomes her dating coach.

Will teaches Annie about how to be confident:

“‘If I waited until I felt confident to live my life and do the things I want to do, I’d never live.’ [Will] stares into my eyes. ‘This lesson is one as old as time: Fake it till you make it. If you want something, pretend you’re the kind of person who’s not scared of it… You should have seen me the first time I went skydiving. I actually thought I was going to shit my pants on the plane… But I told myself I was Tom Cruise at that moment and somehow it worked. Ended up being one of the most fun things I’ve ever done’” (102-103).

Annie surprises Will by how passionate she is. She even convinces Will that she’s ready to get her own tattoo (not of a flower, since that’s her mom’s thing, but of a book, since she loves romance books). Getting a tattoo was something she always wanted but was too afraid to do. She also says she wants to travel the world one day, especially to Paris.

Will in turn surprises Annie by not just supporting her love for romance books (calling them “free therapy”), but re-enacting them for her (by wearing a pirate, earring, etc. and “kidnapping” Annie from her brother’s wedding to get a moment with her).

They admit their feelings for each other, but Will is still scared about settling down.

In the meantime, a customer in the flower shop asks out Annie. Two months ago, this would have been Annie’s dream guy: secure job, polite, and close to his family (he even arranges their first date to be watching his nephew’s Little League baseball game). However, when he talks about how he doesn’t want to ever travel, and how he thinks romance books are “unrealistic fluff”, Annie realizes that she prefers Will.

It’s not long before Will comes to his senses and realizes that he’s willing to settle down for Annie, seeing as he finally understands the difference between love and lust. He buys a truck and house in Annie’s hometown and enrolls in a community college to become a teacher.
